Never put off until tomorrow, what you can or should do today. We often hear this expression, certainly in the UK, and it’s very true. Procrastination is prevalent in the IT environment, yet oddly IT is one of the Business functions that has to react quickly to events. In fact many IT environments are constantly in the reactionary stage of maturity and never seem to be able to move into that proactive stage.
Why do I mention this now? Well sadly just today I chatted with a friend who informed me that his best friend’s wife just died of cancer in a very short space of time, leaving behind a 39yr old widower with 2 young kids. Tragic I’m sure you’ll agree, but yet again it emphasised to me that we really must do today what we intend to, as we just don’t know if we’ll see tomorrow. So my advise is live life to the full, endeavour to push to fulfil your goals or dreams, and aim for no regrets, just valuable life experiences.
This must apply to our working environment too, as we spend so much of our lives in at work. If you’d always meant to investigate or seek to improve the services you deliver then don’t wait any longer, make a plan and do it. Take the initiative, your customers, stakeholders, managers and peers will all respect you for it. Remember that Continual improvement programme you once started? Dust it down and revisit it, and review the services you deliver. Take responsibility for improving what we do, and see the ripple affect it will have. As for something like BSM, ITIL, and Cloud computing they not a luxury, or an optional extra, I truly believe it is a responsibility to embrace them. It just makes too much sense. The industry is moving and embracing them, just like they did with ERP, BPM and the WWW 10 years ago, let’s learn the lessons from that, and make it a reality. We will all be winners if we do, the IT Services, the Business Services and our customers. Remember too your own personal development both within the working environment, and outside. We are in the service industry and if we all take that seriously and aim to “do to others as you would have them do to you” we’ll see maturity, improvement, and value becoming a reality, not to mention our own lives becoming better. Get goals and them work on fulfilling them in Business and Private life.
Yes I know this blog has been a little off-beat for me, but I just felt it needs to be said!
